Finding Hope in a Season of Hurry

Posted by: CDFWarrington on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at 6:39AM

Today is the first Sunday of Advent 2024. Today is when Hope lights the way.

Sacred Snapshot (a.k.a. TL;DR;):

There's a beautiful irony in beginning our season of hopeful waiting right in the middle of "I-can't-wait" weekend. As the world rushes from Black Friday deals to Cyber Monday clicks, we're invited to light a single purple candle – a quiet act of rebellion against the chaos of consumption. This first Sunday of Advent reminds us that our deepest hopes can't be found in a shopping cart or wrapped in a bow. Instead, we turn to a hope that has sustained believers for millennia, a hope that unites Christians across every tradition and time: the hope found in Christ's coming.

What's Inside:

Join us as we explore how true hope flickers to life in the midst of holiday chaos. We'll discover how this first purple candle lights the way from doorbusters to divine promises, from flash-mob shopping to faithful anticipation, and from cyber deals to eternal hopes. Plus, we'll see how this same hope has inspired generations of believers to raise their voices in song – from quiet medieval gardens to mountaintop proclamations!

When Flash Mobs Meet Candlelight

Picture this: It's the weekend after Thanksgiving, 2024. Shopping carts clatter through store aisles, phones ping with Cyber Monday alerts, and somewhere in the midst of it all, a single purple candle flickers to life. It's like trying to light a contemplative candle in the middle of a flash-mob shopping spree!

Welcome to the First Sunday of Advent, where the church calendar's timing has a sense of divine humor. Just as the world screams "hurry up and buy!", we're invited to slow down and wait. As holiday shopping carts overflow, we're called to empty ourselves of hurry and make room for hope.

Three Faces of Hope

Hope comes in many forms this season:

  • The World's Hope: "50% off today only!" "While supplies last!" "Don't miss out!" These urgent whispers promise satisfaction... at least until the next must-have thing comes along.
  • Ancient Israel's Hope: "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light" (Isaiah 9:2). For centuries, prophets spoke of a coming King, a promise worth more than any door-buster deal.
  • Our Present Hope: We stand in a unique moment, looking back to a promise fulfilled in a manger and forward to a promise yet to come. Our hope has two horizons – both crowned with Christ.

🎵 Harmony of Faith:

Traditional: "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming"
Gospel: "Go Tell It On The Mountain"

From quiet medieval contemplation to joyous proclamation, these songs remind us that true hope can't be contained. Whether through the gentle metaphor of a winter rose or the bold declaration from mountaintops, the message remains the same - our hope in Christ is worth sharing!

A Light That Unites Us All

Even in the midst of "I gotta have it" season, something remarkable happens. Hearts turn toward giving. Hands reach out to help. The same weekend that begins with Black Friday ends with Giving Tuesday – as if hope itself is gently turning our attention from getting to giving.

This hope we celebrate today is the same hope that unites the Body of Christ across every distinction:

  • In ornate cathedrals and humble storefronts
  • In ancient liturgies and contemporary services
  • In every language and cultural expression
  • Through every denomination and tradition

Though we may differ on many things, we stand united in this: our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness.

Making Room for Hope

As we light this first purple candle, we're doing more than marking time until Christmas. We're declaring that hope doesn't arrive in a delivery truck or show up in a shopping cart. Hope came in a manger and will come again in glory.

Take a moment today to:

  • Light a candle (purple if you have it, any color if you don't)
  • Turn off the shopping alerts (they'll still be there tomorrow)
  • Breathe in the quiet promise of hope
  • Remember you're not waiting alone

Your Invitation to Hope

The world offers us "hope in limited quantities while supplies last." But Advent invites us to a hope that never runs out, never expires, and never goes on clearance - because it's founded on God's eternal promises.

As we begin this Advent journey together, may this first candle remind us: true hope isn't found in a flash mob of shoppers, but in the quiet certainty of God's promises. Whether you're singing of roses blooming in winter's darkness or shouting the good news from mountaintops, you're part of a story of hope that began long before Black Friday and will continue long after Cyber Monday is forgotten and the batteries have died.

Because at its heart, this purple candle reminds us: hope isn't something we buy – it's Someone who bought us. And that's worth more than all the door-buster deals in the world.
